Breed Notes - 21 Apr 2015
Today is a very critical day, as I took Dublin to the vets for his hip x-ray and thyroid test. He was really good about it, and the vet seemed to know about the various thyroid issues, so I hope we will get meaningful results. I confess to having crossed fingers until that all-important document comes from the KC. Happily, he only needed heavy sedation, not a full anaesthetic, so he was back with me very quickly, although it did put him off his lunch….back to normal this evening, I’m pleased to say.
One thing taking him today did was to enable me to pop into my friend Leila’s for a coffee. She is the owner of a lovely Hovawart blond boy called Groucho, who is now well over 12, and is fit as a fiddle. Leila didn’t have him from a puppy, so I’m not sure of his “proper” name, but I do know he was bred by Julie, and I am sure she should be really pleased with him. He does a job on their smallholding, with round-up and stock guarding duties, and patrols the boundaries every day in all weathers. A dog to be proud of.
One thing that came from the meetings I forgot to mention last week was the breed seminar and judging test to take place at Nesscliffe Village Hall on June 14th, Sunday. Places on the judging section are limited, but there should be enough room for the morning session for anyone who wants to come. The cost is £10 for the seminar session in the morning, and the whole day, to include the hand-on assessment, coming to £25. Attendance certificates will be issued. Please contact Ann Travis for more details, or have a look at the club website but do make a note of the date in your diary, as it is not that far away.
It was Welsh Working and Pastoral Championship show at Builth Wells last Saturday, and our judge was Mr. J. Stubbs, who comes from Ireland. It was bright and dry, but jolly cold. We were in a different building this year which was ideal for the dogs, but humans needed their thermals on! Our Dublin had a lovely Birthday present of BoB, and as he was one on the day, he qualified as best puppy too. BB went to Janice Robinson and Dave Brown’s Zwartbos Moet …well done to them. It was super to have an entry of nine actually present. I was a bit concerned to see Ann struggling round the ring, and it transpired that she had taken a really nasty tumble earlier, and with her Dave having a bad hip, in need of immediate surgery, life can’t be easy for them. We all wish them much better health in the very near future.
