Breed Notes - 10 Sep 2014
Sadly, last Saturday gave us a clash of events, and we chose a party in Devon over attending Richmond Championship Show in Surrey. We therefore missed seeing the biggest attendance outside Crufts in the last 2 years for Jeff Luscott, with 12 hovawarts in attendance. BoB was a first for Lilly (Pines Meditation) with Sue Scully, winning from veteran, as did BoS P.Monet, Lucy Campbell’s Levi. Reserves went to Lynne White & Liz Whitmore’s Mist (Driftingsky Mist) and Kathy Woodger’s Hightimbers Tuppence.Liz & Lynne’s D.Alize beat two of her sisters for best puppy. Following hot on Richmond’s heels Darlington is next Saturday, with breed judge Craig Hosie, who has attracted an entry of 9 dogs. Both these show are a great improvement on most of the rest of the year, but entries are still a very long way from their historical zenith.
One plus from our choice of the party was a chance to watch a Hovawart doing his job as guardian of the courtyard. Keith Denby’s Perro (P.Aken) lives in a farm with a proper courtyard, where a lot of the festivities were taking place, and he duly informed his master with a couple of deep (but not menacing) barks of each guest’s arrival. Perro seemed pretty relaxed about the whole thing, which I suppose is a result of years of experience, as the farm is also a very busy B&B establishment in a very beautiful part of Exmoor.
The phone lines and airwaves have been buzzing this week as, following Bettina’s alert, we have been trying to get the lowdown on a young bitch being offered for sale on line for £50, but despite everyone’s very best endeavours, contact has proved impossible. A close examination of the photographs on line lead one to the view that, despite the dog’s markings, it is more likely to be a rottweiler cross than a pedigree Hovawart. The internet certainly increases activity across all fronts.
One bit of sad news, also learnt on-line via Facebook, is that Anne Stewart’s bitch has scanned negative for a litter. It is so devastating when one’s hopes are dashed like that. We still have everything crossed for Acorn and Freya.
