I have had a sad email from Ann Marriott to say that her Nettle (Tlos Cledaugh…I hope I’ve got that right!) crossed the Rainbow Bridge, not long after her 11th birthday. She suffered a massive seizure, and Ann took the only course she could. As we have found recently, the end can be really beautiful, with your old friend drifting off in your arms, and you have the knowledge that you have saved them from unnecessary suffering. We wish Ann happy memories of all the good times. Nettle was almost ever-present during her lifetime at Discover Dogs at Crufts on the Saturday, and will leave big pawprints to fill.
An email from Helen and Nick Boisseau tells me that they are still waiting in France for the “off”, but Freya is trying to play it cool. I do just wonder whether Nature is being a bit clever here, delaying her season until the weather (very hot where they are, apparently) cools down a bit. I know that Molly, our cow, seems to be able to delay the birth of her calf for days if the weather is not to her liking.
Last weekend saw the departure of the remaining pups. Happily, all the Hovawarts are now in their new homes, which do include Harvey, who is staying with Kathy and Stephen, and Dublin who seems to be getting his paws under our table. We haven’t kept a male since the ill-fated Louis died at 4 months, so it will be interesting to see how he (and we) copes, especially when the girls are in season. So far they are all tolerating him, except Whistle, who thinks he’s appalling. Unfortunately for her, he is sure she is his mother. Ironically, one of the two dogs actually has found a home in Ireland, joining an eight year old Minches boy, so John spent 8 hours of Saturday on the train to Holyhead and back to meet Kathy at the ferry to take him “home”. These puppies are amazing travellers, he went the 4 hours of train journey…one change…with no noise or mess at all.
News from Janice Robinson that her Zwartbos puppy, Lexie, has passed the KC Good Citizen Gold test at just 9 months. I know they have it in mind to do working trials with Lexie, so that has to be good for starters. Nothing like that sort of news to encourage me to get training again with Acorn, Flag and now, I suppose Dublin. The Glen puppies, and the Hovawarts latterly, have rather taken over my schedule of late.
Julie is in the process of compiling the pictures for this year’s Hovawart Club Calendar. We are aiming to keep the prices as for last year, and we still need your photographs to make this year extra special, so get snapping (if that’s what you do nowadays) and send the results in to Julie Condron as soon as you can. The only pictures we don’t want to put in are the show poses. Give me a call if you want any more information. Ideally, the pictures should go by email.
Latest news of Ann and Dave is that Dave is making really good progress, and at last Ann appears to be overcoming the infections, but is still very tired at the end of a day. This may have something to do with the amount of notice taken by each of them of the doctor’s instructions to rest and recuperate for 6 weeks. Next weekend it is National Working, and I hope we might see them there. Certainly, there is a larger entry than of late, running into double figures by all accounts. Liz and Lynne aren’t among them, though, as Lynne is involved with Torrin in a demonstration of Rally. Liz also told me that they are going to spend a short break on the Dingle peninsular in the west of Ireland, where they will be looking at a potential home for Baloo. They sure are going the extra mile to get him properly settled in a new home.
