It was the Club AGM last Sunday, and there was a better than usual attendance at Liz & Lynne’s lovely home near Nottingham. Club business was speedily dispatched with nothing controversial on the agenda, allowing everyone time to appreciate our hosts’ lovely six-week-old puppies, three of each sex, and an even split between blond and black and gold. I am sure that this is the age at which they are at their cutest, not afraid of anything, including making themselves look a bit silly by falling over or getting stuck. I hope there were still six left after we had all gone, but it would have been entirely understandable had someone tried to sneak one out under a coat. One absentee from the meeting was Maggie, who is making really good progress with her new knee, but couldn’t have coped with a long car journey there and back.
There were no changes in the committee, or for the officers of the Club as a result of the AGM, but one item that did require a vote was the Tia Trophy winner. This is given to the Hovawart that has done most to promote the breed away from the showring. The winner this year, by a convincing margin, was Torrin for his work in the new sport of Rally, which he has really taken to, as have his owners Lynne & Liz. Looking back over the past winners, it is amazing how many and varied are their fields of activity, from PAT dogs through all the canine disciplines to Search & Rescue. We do truly have a most versatile breed of dog.
Once the committee had finished playing with the controls on the extremely comfortable reclining chairs (fits of laughter all round), one of the main points was an update on the Owners’ Handbook that Nick is in the process of revamping. There is still quite a bit of work to do, and various members were allocated sections where it was felt their experience would be of help, but it certainly looks like ending up a most worthwhile project, and the Club is most fortunate to have Nick’s professional guidance available for it.
I happened to look at the KC publication relating to the health etc of pedigree dogs, and was pleasurably surprise…although perhaps I should have known…that there are only 5 breeds, out of 131 that have been tested, that have a better average hip score than ours. I hope that is the reward for our continuing diligence in this area.
Like all the other breeds, we have been asked to comment on the potential move from Earls Court to the London Excel Centre for the November “Discover Dogs” from 2015. The general feeling in the committee was one of disappointment, in that Excel is so difficult to get to unless you live east of London. Earls Court could never have been said to be ideal, but at least we were used to it. I suspect we will adopt the usual British response in these circumstances…a lot of grumbling and moaning before the event, but when it actually happens, we’ll just get on with it, and in hindsight find we quite enjoyed it.
