Breed Notes - 29 Jan 2014
I have just come off the phone from a joyous Liz, who was able to confirm that all her Christmas efforts, taking Mist (Driftingsky Mist) to Ireland, and being stuck there because of bad weather, have proved well worthwhile, because she has had a positive pregnancy scan, with puppies due to be born towards the end of February. The sire is Mick Murphy’s Archie (Glenbower Jans Cuban), a big handsome blond, and I am sure all parties are tickled pink.
People are often under the misapprehension that breeding dogs is like falling off a log, and all you have to do is get the dog and bitch together at the appropriate time in her season, and puppies will inevitably result…..not so. I seem to recall a lecture I attended a while back given, I think, by the well known Gary England, in which he said that puppies resulted from good matings on exactly the right day with no health problems maybe 4 times out of five. So I reckon that, with all the possible things that might not be ideal, success rates are considerably lower than that. So well done to all concerned, and, as the Club AGM is to be at Liz & Lynne’s house, we can all look forward to a very short meeting and a long look at puppies.
Simon Parsons wrote to say that Dog World in the run-up to Crufts are hoping to feature “rare” breeds (those with separate classes but without CC status) so hopefully somebody out there may decide to support this feature. It is scheduled for the 28th February issue. It would be nice to make of much of it as we can.
I’m not going to grumble about this wet weather, because I keep thinking of the folk and animals, both domestic and farm, who reside in Somerset. How on earth are they managing?
