Breed Notes - 12 Jan 2014
Welcome to the first breed notes for 2014 with Our Dogs and I do hope you and all your Hovawarts had a wonderful Christmas. I was working over the festive period and therefore Sarah and the kids were invited to friends for dinner on Christmas day. Sarah had bought a lovely chocolate cake from M&S and left it on the kitchen work surface in it’s box and in the carrier bag. We had went out to friends on Christmas eve and on return you could imagine my horror to find that Caileag our 9 year old Hovie had managed to eat the whole cake and there wasn’t even a crumb on the floor. The box had been taken apart with great care and you wouldn’t have known that a chocolate cake had been in the box, it was all licked clean, so a phone call to the on call vet for advice, who was already in the surgery dealing with another sick dog. After going through the ingredients and the words dark chocolate we summed it up and decided that the icing would contain more sugar than chocolate and was advised to keep an eye on her and that she would probably drink more and have diarrhoea, well madam Caileag was neither up nor down. She seems to be getting worse for stealing in her old age. The other day she had went through the kitchen bin whilst we were out, with things scattered across the kitchen floor. I have had some recent scares with Caileag just when she has finished eating or half way through her meals. We always feed the dogs twice a day and it was the second meal of the day and whilst eating her dinner she stopped, became distressed and then stood in a corner of the living room, then started to salivate and then wanted out to the garden, she was licking her lips and then just stood there with her head down, really unhappy, and she would appear bloated in her abdomen, I was convinced it was a torsion/bloat type picture a phone call to the on call vets with a discussion on symptoms and to wait and see within the next half hour, in between times a good dog friend recommended Rennies , so two were quickly put down the hatch and things after an hour started to settle. This has occurred twice now and one is just worried that is this some warning signs that she could be susceptible to a torsion and I hope that I don’t sit on it and wait and see. Has anybody else ever experienced these symptoms with their dogs, if so can you drop me a line and let me know what works to try and prevent it. My landline is now up and running as we had lost it for over a week , so apologies if you were trying to get in touch with news.
Well 2013 is behind us now and to recap the top dog for the year was Julies Gunner Zwartbos Carisbrooke with top stud dog being his father Igor von der Hofreite and top brood bitch going to Val & Steve Shones Ursine van de Romerweide of Zwartbos. So well done to all Concerned. Val had sent me pictures of their last litter and how stunning they looked, they will all be making their new owners happy and with some hope that some could be in the show ring this year to help boost numbers. Remember crufts entries will be closing soon , I will probably need to stay at home and watch the highlights on the TV, as I am waiting on surgery for my knee after an injury which they had xrayed and then an MRI and now they need to operate, so driving will be out of the picture and will need to rely on Sarah to walk the dog. Our first classes for 2014 will be at Manchester next week with another poor entry of three, so to those who have entered good luck and I will report on results next week.
