Breed Notes - 19 Jun 2012
John was the Judge at Border Union show last weekend, and I went with him to keep him company on the long drive. We set off, on Friday afternoon, in the dry, but from Hereford onwards it rained persistently, not ideal driving conditions. Later than expected we arrived in the town of Coldstream at our B and B., and what an interesting town it turned out to be, with the oldest Pet Shop in the world! Established in 1830 Mr. W Howden’s Pet Food Supplies was pre-Victorian and had previously been a chemist. To enhance the atmosphere Mr Howden had kept all the original Victorian bottles and artefacts lined up on the original wooden shelving. It was so worth a visit and we chatted for a little while before I remember the object of my visit, to buy bedtime biscuits for the dogs we had with us. Another doggie fact I was told whilst in this interesting store was that the very first black Labrador was imported from Canada to Coldstream by the Earl of Home.

We were third in the ring and John was ready and waiting as soon as our ring became available. Having started out looking reasonably smart he ended up judging with mud splattered up to his knees and his shoes completely covered in the stuff. Several exhibits had been running around on the same track in our marquee, so it was very wet and muddy. Folk made little fuss and judging resulted in Craig Hosie’s beautiful blonde bitch Cealeg (Annvad Daimey’s Princess for Hosarvar) being BOB and Gill’s Chalkie (Berkenbos Chinook)going BD. I think Craig must have carried his bitch into the tent from the car park because she was yet again immaculate, with not a blemish on her pale blonde furnishings. Some feat!!! Full critique will appear in DW. It was a well organized show, with friendly committee all around, and a super lunch was served (for me as well!) in the New Springwood Hall, well quite new I suppose, it had been opened by Princess Royal in July 2003.

Talked to Julie on the telephone the other evening, and she asked me to request Hovawart photographs for the 2013 calendar. She would like as many as possible, as soon as possible, so she can crack on with it. Puppies, older dogs, all colours, both sexes, just good photographs, and no “show” poses, please. She is happy for them to be sent by email, or as “ordinary” photographs…older readers will know what I mean!... Can’t believe we are talking about the Christmas calendar, but it would be really good to have it available for the IHF weekend, so get clicking!!
