Breed Notes - 6 Mar 2011
Elinor Anderson was at an obedience training weekend recently, and came away with a super idea for play stimulation. Acorn thinks it is absolutely wonderful. What you do is get a horse lunging whip, tie a smallish bit of cloth to the whip end….I’ve used a strip of Vetbed…. This then becomes like a jumping bean with the merest flick of your wrist, and seems to amuse the younger dog for hours. It serves not only as a reward after work, but is good exercise, and was demonstrated as a real “motivational” incentive! It made me laugh, I felt like a Circus Ring Master.
Maggie Spencer was in touch today, unsure whether she was happy or sad….her puppies have gone to their new homes this weekend, leaving her with “Dollar”, the b/g bitch she is keeping from the litter. After such an intense period, it is always an emotional time seeing the little bundles off to phase two of their lives. I try to see it as a positive experience, introducing new people to the delights of the breed, and avoiding the ultimate nightmare of having a whole litter remain at home …imagine them all at, say, nine months old, it doesn’t bear thinking about!! Nevertheless, there is always a feeling of loss at this time.
I think Julie has got all four days covered for the “Discover Dogs” stand, so whatever day you find yourself at the NEC please be sure to go along and say hello to the volunteers. A friendly face in the crowd is always a welcome sight.
See you at Crufts.
