Firstly, a big apology to Pauline Thompson, whose dog Baxter was best of Breed at Darlington where I was judging last month. In my critique, I wrongly named him as Hightimbers Travel Tickets, when he is in fact Hightimbers Master Tickets. I can only put it down to a massive typo, but I can imagine how galling it is when you want to properly enjoy a good win, and the edge is taken off it by such an irritating and unnecessary error. I just hope Baxter goes on to have many such wins, and this memory will fade into insignificance.

There was a bit of a drama at last week’s Club show, when Julie Condron was unable to fulfil her judging appointment because she had a sick dog at home and is effectively her only carer. I have only admiration for her taking this difficult decision, your dogs’ health and wellbeing should always take priority. We spoke to Julie after the show, and have now had an email from her to say that her girl is now stabilised and making good progress….the email was accompanied by a couple of pretty graphic photos that I was glad hadn’t arrived at a meal time.

Husband John was asked to step into the breach late Saturday night, causing a rapid search in the wardrobe for rather smarter cloths than originally planned. The exhibitors were very sporting about the enforced change, and no-one withdrew from competition, despite him having judged Crufts eighteen months ago. I know he was grateful for everyone’s forbearance, and he was pleased with the entry he was faced with. Results can be seen on the club website, but he says he was particularly taken with the way all the veterans had got better, and he really rated some bitches that, in their younger days, had gone unnoticed.

Of particular delight to us was the appearance of four of the puppies from Kibble’s April litter. They were too young, fortunately, to have been entered in the show (because they would have had to withdraw) but they had good “rough and tumbles” together, and it is particularly amazing to see Rosie, who was half the size of the others, and has to all intents and purposes, now caught up. It is lovely the way they remember you, too. Dogs do have wonderful memories. I well recall our first Hovawart, Tegen, still going potty at the sight of her breeder, Janet Kibble, when she was fourteen.

Covid restrictions earlier in the year has meant that a lot of shows have been concertinaed into a short space of time, so 4 days after Birmingham National we had classes at the Scottish KC double show, although hovawarts only featured at the “May” part, where Min Inches went BoB under well known allrounder Sigurd Wilberg with her eleven-year-old Fasskoleys Silkie. Move forward a further 4 days to the club show, and then, with just a day’s respite, it is back to Scotland for Border Union, where Joan Golding, show manager at the Club show, found her BoB in Caron & John McClure’s Kanukalos Burletta. Four shows in ten days, with a backwards-and-forwards journey between Scotland and the West Midlands to boot. Some people and dogs have a lot of stamina, that’s for sure. For us, I think there is now a bit of respite. The next show I think should be The Scottish Working and Pastoral on November 6th, but I think I heard that this has been cancelled…you would need to check that out. We might venture to LKA for a bit of dog-related Christmas shopping.
