Breed Notes - 5 Sep 2021
Firstly, I am very sorry to report the passing of Craig & Sarah’s Caileag (IHF Ch. Annvad Daimys Princess for Hosavar) at the amazing age of 16…yes, 16 !! I cannot recall any Hovawart in the UK that has reached that milestone, although there were reports of a 17 year old on the continent. Sad though it is for her family, it must also be a celebration of an amazing life, and there will be so many wonderful memories of a most beautiful bitch, who I only ever remember seeing as absolutely immaculate, to the point that Craig carried her into the ring when it was muddy and then some at Border Union….of course, she was BoB. I think she was only the second UK Hovawart to achieve IHF Champion status, and the first without travelling abroad. She also made the big ring at Crufts. Such a pity that she was not blessed with motherhood, but maybe nature felt that the ultimate had been reached. Our thoughts are with Craig and Sarah at this time.

Caileag, of course, looked wonderful in photographs, which leads me neatly, if not subtly, to the Club calendar for 2022, which is in its final stages of production. The committee had a vote on the pictures to go in it this year, not an easy task, as Janice had, by whatever means, managed to cajole over a hundred from what I understand were shy and retiring photographers. I hope everyone will be happy with the end result, it was surprisingly easy to get a balance between the three colours when it came to it. This is always a concern, as it is important to ensure fair representation of them all. The calendar will be available from the end of the month, and especially at the club show.

This segways nicely into the next subject….the club show. Entries close this coming weekend, they must be posted by Saturday. To reiterate, our main judge this year is one of the club’s founder members, Julie Condron, and there are also three special award classes being judged by Marion Hodgson. You do need to have entered the main show to compete in these classes, but the results are not taken into account when the awards are made for Best in Show etc. It is an opportunity, somewhat of a rarity these days, for a judge newer to the breed to get much need experience to further their judging progress. There will be fewer than usual activities this year, but it will still afford the chance of a get-together with other breed enthusiasts, and there is always something to talk about.

Julie Condron always writes a most thorough critique whenever she judges, and I have recently been reading some of them from earlier years. It is so interesting to learn what the judge thinks about your dog, and you can often pick up on little things to improve the way you present and show that will give you that little extra edge next time out. I must say I eagerly scan the pages of Our Dogs each week to read them, and I do find it disappointing that there is such a variation in time between show and publication of the critique, sometimes they are in the next available issue, others can be months in the publishing. For myself, I find that any delay makes what is not an easy task at the best of times more difficult, and the longer I leave writing it the harder it gets.

See you at Oswestry
