Breed Notes - 18 Jul 2021
For the first time in what, unbelievably, is 16 months, we have finally had a dog show with breed classes…indeed, in the manor of the fabled London buses, you wait for ages, then two come along at once !! Firstly there was the East of England LKA, where the honours were scooped up, more than somewhat, by Caron & John McLure with Hightimbers Ticket to Dream who not only took BoB under judge Eileen Kelly, but then went on to win the working group under Frances Richards. What a day !! Best Dog was Bea Dellar’s H. Ticket to Rock, litter brother to the winner.

On Saturday, attention turned to the beautiful Three Counties Showground at Malvern for the National Working & Pastoral Breeds Society Championship Show. The judge was breed specialist Hester Oxborrow, down from her home in western Scotland. She found her BoB in Maggie Spencer’s young dog, Duxfortis Harris at Hightimbers, with Gina Challoner’s Enormouse Uptown Girl at Farmwatch Best Bitch and Kitty Hemsworth’s Driftingky Tousle Best Veteran. Congratulations all round. We were entered, but sadly had to give it a miss, as John’s leg, although improving, still isn’t up to a day’s showing. We hope it will be by the time the next show, Bath, comes round in a couple of weeks or so.

Talking of Tousle, Kitty, who kindly sent me details of the EELKA show, also told me about a good result she had achieved at her first BCOS show when Tousle placed joint sixth out of forty in Grade 2, including full marks for Drive & Enthusiasm, Teamwork and Novice Recall. Kitty puts her success down to the ability to treat Tousle in the ring after each exercise, and is not quite so confident of a similar result at “ordinary” obedience next time round.

Personally, I am rather enjoying this spell of hot weather, but the dogs spend quite a lot of time looking for shade and cool….apart from Little Dorrit, the Glen, who is a great fan of sunbathing. We are hoping for the dry a bit longer to get the hay in….you know what they say about making hay.
