Breed Notes - 18 Apr 2021
These breed notes are also sent to “Our Dogs” weekly paper that comes out on Thursdays. They have asked that I delay posting them in line until after that day.

To box or not to box, that is the question!! After the early arrival (on day sixty) of 10 beautiful puppies of considerably varied sizes this last week, we had to consider how best to manage their early rearing. The smallest pups not only would struggle to get to a feeding station past their bulkier siblings, but hanging on in the face of heavyweight competition could prove disastrous. Kibble’s previous litter of 8 was, of course, ideal, with each puppy could having use of a teat without needing to share, but 10 into 8 doesn’t quite work. In the past we have tried with big litters to ensure that every puppy gets a proper chance, whist leaving the whole litter together, but this time we are trying an alternative version of 5 on, 5 off, changing over every two hours or so. This seems to work well, but it is necessary to ensure that the group “off” is out of earshot, and Kibble is having a walk round the garden at the changeover. She must wonder how the puppies she has just left full and asleep are suddenly hungry again, but she does seem to accept it. My sleep patterns are in chaos!! One good thing, this litter does prove Maggie Spencer’s Harris’ stud credentials.

Tomorrow, April 19th, is a special day because our Acorn is 12 years old. There is something very special about the older dog, and Acorn certainly has her individuality that has become accentuated over the years. She does love a good bark, and any excuse (or none) will do. I am sure she can hear a leaf fall half a mile away, but it does surprise me that she can’t hear me calling her from ten yards, unless of course it is supper time. She has been much rejuvenated by spending time with granddaughter Thursday, long may it last.

A couple of boxes arrived on Friday containing the Club Year Books, hot off the press. The are now winging their way to all paid up members, but not without the smallest grumble from club treasurer John about the cost of postage these days. Considering the lack of show activity last year, and indeed any other organised dog events, it must have been a nightmare for editor Nick Boisseau to find sufficient content to make an interesting publication, but he has succeeded in spades, and there are some good photographs as well. We were sorting out some old boxes the other day, and the contrast, not in content but in production quality over the last forty years is remarkable. Unfortunately there was a mix-up over the report that went into the Year Book concerning test results for hips and elbows, thyroid and DM, which meant that most of the scores for 2020 failed to make the finished book. The club apologises to those affected, and the missing figures will be in the next newsletter as well as the 2021 Year Book as a permanent record. If you need more immediate information, please contact the club secretary.

The weather here in Shropshire has been great on recent days…I don’t miss the mud at all…I do hope it has been the same for you.
