In a week that has seen the loss of Captain Sir Tom, such an inspiration to the nation in dark times, I am sad to report the passing on Tuesday last of the Reverend Gill Green, who was Chairman of the Club at the millennium, after a short but very aggressive fight with cancer. Gill had successfully undergone brain surgery a year or two back, and had recovered well, but this time it was not to be. Our deepest sympathy goes to her husband Rupert and her other family members.

Gill was a most caring human being who managed to find the good side in every situation and combatted adversity with good humour and her indomitable Christian faith, but was never “preachy”. I will always remember that lovely smile, and I shall certainly miss knowing that she’s around. She was someone who’s good and sensible advice was readily given but never thrust upon you. “What would Gill suggest” will forever be a maxim to sort problems out.

Gill and Rupert’s involvement with hovawarts started with dogs from Vindael (Lyn Wiggins) and Kynyaf (Janet Kibble), but we were very pleased when they decided to take on Saffron, one of the few blond puppies we have bred, and gave him the most wonderful home. Gill and Rupert even did a dog-sitting stint for us. I also have very happy memories of a trip that I went on to the Finnish hovawart club show with Gill, Gill Stockton and Janet Kibble. We had a wonderful time, sitting on the grass in the sunshine looking at superb dogs, and made friendships that have lasted through the years.

Living where she did, she became closely involved with Janet, and indeed in the absence of any family, she organised Janet’s funeral and a whole lot else besides. Naturally, she also took the service, and I would like to include part of her address in memory of Janet at that service because to me it illustrates Gill’s great humanity and kindness.

“By the time I got to know her, Janet’s life had begun the downward trajectory which continued until her death At times she was certainly the victim of circumstances. She also made some decisions that were less than wise and these resulted in her having constant money worries. Her appearance and her manner, both eccentric, made people who should have known better write her off as an embarrassing nuisance. But those of us who really knew her could see behind all that was the intelligent woman she undoubtedly was. Yes, she was exasperating. At times you wanted to smack her. But she was also funny, warm hearted, totally lacking in any self-pity, generous in her forgiveness of other people’s foibles, never malicious, appreciative of kindness and honourable. Not given to envy, neither devious nor manipulative, she never asked for nor expected pity, I liked her, admired her fortitude and wished I had been a better friend. I don’t think anyone who knew her as we did will easily forget her”

Gill, may your faith and good works be rewarded. Rest in peace and rise in glory.
