Breed Notes - 7 Oct 2015
We were really looking forward to the show, and set off on Saturday afternoon in 2 cars, with 5 dogs in one, and all the equipment in the other. Everything went well until we ran into the M4 road closure, which forced us to reroute via Newbury…and not just us. We were inching along nose-to-tail when my old car decided it would overheat, making us pull off to the side of the road, where we sat for the best part of 3 hours, before we had the courage to restart. All that time, traffic had been passing at less than walking pace, non-stop. Fortunately, there was only about a mile to cover before we reached a roundabout, where almost everybody took the first exit and we decided on the second. This meant we could actually motor along at a reasonable speed, and my little car could cope again. The lost time meant we missed out on the pre-show supper that had been arranged, but we did get to Bisley in time to get a bed for the night. It all took me back to my early days of motoring, when these happenings were commonplace…I think I prefer the reliable modern car.

Sunday dawned bright and sparkly, with just a nip in the air, ideal for the show. The obedience ring, with judge Chris Moss, and Maggie’s “Have a Go” circuit were of course outside, with Paula Foakes running the KC Good Citizen tests in what looked remarkably like an enormous conservatory, and the Breed Show, judged by Craig Hosie, in the main pavilion. The show started with what I suspect was a record number of puppy dogs, 7, a real tester for Craig, and there were a further half dozen youngsters, but sadly, only one in post graduate, none in limit, and one entry in open, which turned out to be the only entered Hovawart not actually present…which in itself is remarkable. Numbers improved again with the veteran class, and with one vintage entry there were 20 males in attendance. Bitch classes followed a similar pattern, with again 7 puppies, but no postgraduate entries. There were more in limit and open than the males, but they were outnumbered by the veterans, dare I say as usual, making a total of 28 bitches. On her eighth birthday, BiS was Carla de Jong’s Unique von de Romerweide, over from the Netherlands, who showed her versatility by also winning “A” in the Obedience ring, albeit standing alone. Again from the veteran class, BD was Janet Pearce and Ian Dangerfield’s Pines Anubis , who also doubled up with 3rd place in Novice Obedience. BP was our Quincebois Tulipwood by Pines, but my favourite moment of the day was in the challenge for best vintage, when the winner DJ licked his sister Whistle’s ear…definitely an “aaaah” moment. I can’t leave talking about the show without a mention of the absolutely super slates judge Craig brought for the main winners…such a wonderful gesture and a prize to treasure for always.

The club again put on three special classes, judged in the lunch hour by Michael Bruggenburg-Rothschild, and these also proved popular, with wins by Carla’s husband Jack with Air Force Bohaemic, Liz & Lynne’s Driftingsky Mist and Carla’s Unique. Having the show indoors did ensure that people were not too spread out, which benefitted both the club stall and the raffle, the prizes for which my Dublin toured round in his cart. I was very proud of the way he performed this task, with dignity and composure. We also had a cake stall, which we did for Rescue funds, depleted somewhat by our little French adventure. A very big “thank you” to all those who brought cakes and raffle prizes, with the cakes raising nearly £100, and not a soggy bottom in sight !

I have already mentioned the “A” class in obedience, but Janice Robinson and Dave Brown deserve a special plaudit, winning both Pre-Beginners and Beginners with their bitch, Zwartbos Moet. Winner of Novice, and second in Beginners was Hightimbers Penny, owned by Caron and John McLure. Judge Chris Moss was complimentary about our Hovawarts, and exhorted people to keep having a go. This was also the theme of a ring run by Maggie with various obstacles and agility pieces. Quite a few had a go, and I hear enjoyed the experience.

All in all, it was a most enjoyable day, judging by the friendly chat throughout the day. There was barely a bark all day, and Craig said that there was only one young puppy that was a bit nervous, purely from a lack of experience. It was lovely to have our visitors from Holland come over, and Eva from the Czech Republic, helping her new puppy owners at their first show, but it was a pity that the distance was a barrier to the Scots and Irish coming. Maybe they’ll make it back again next year, when the show will be further north. It is so difficult for a club like ours, with a small membership, to find somewhere that suits everyone, actually not just difficult, impossible !
