HOVAWART BREED NOTES JUNE 8TH 2020

I WAS TICKLED PINK WITH OUR FIRST CLUB COMMITTEE MEETING HELD LAST WEEK VIA ZOOM. ONCE WE HAD (FINALLY, IN OUR CASE ….WITH LLOYD’S INEVITABLE HELP) MASTERED THE TECHNOLOGY AND GOT IT WORKING, IT WAS GREAT TO BE ABLE TO SEE EVERYONE WHEN THEY SPOKE….SO MUCH BETTER THAN THE CONFERENCE CALLS WE USED PREVIOUSLY, BECAUSE YOU COULD SEE WHEN PEOPLE WERE SMILING OR SERIOUS OR SAD, SO MUCH LESS CHANCE OF MISUNDERSTANDINGS, AND….NOT THAT I’M NOSEY, BUT…..A CHANCE TO CATCH A GLANCE OF PEOPLES’ HOMES. ON A VERY SAD NOTE, WE WERE ALL IN TEARS OVER JANET LOSING HER YOUNG JED TO BONE CANCER AT ONLY FIVE YEARS OLD. HE WENT TO THE VET WITH WHAT EVERYONE THOUGHT WAS A CRUCIATE PROBLEM, ONLY FOR THE SCAN TO GIVE THE MOST DEVASTATING NEWS. AT LEAST HE DIDN’T SUFFER LONG, AND JANET AND IAN WILL, AFTER THE GRIEVING, HAVE GOOD MEMORIES TO RECALL.

ONE OF THE ISSUES WE TALKED ABOUT WAS THE CHANGES TO WHAT IS NOW CALLED THE “JUDGES EDICATION PROGRAMME (BREED SHOWS)”…IT USED TO BE THE “JCF”…IN PARTICULAR THE NUMBERS OF DOGS NEEDING TO BE JUDGED FOR SOMEONE TO PROGRESS UP THE JUDGING LADDER. AT PRESENT, WE ARE IN THE “A” BAND, BUT WE WILL TRY TO GET TO “A MINUS”, BECAUSE EVEN THAT WILL REQUIRE A MINIMUM OF 15 DOGS. SOME STATISTICS FOR YOU… THE AVERAGE NUMBER OF REGISTRATIONS OF HOVAWARTS OVER THE LAST TEN YEARS IS 23.1 PER YEAR, AND LAST YEAR THERE WERE 21 SHOWS SCHEDULING OUR BREED WITH A TOTAL OF 206 DOGS ACTUALLY JUDGED (OBVIOUSLY INCLUDING SOME JUDGED MULTIPLE TIMES). IF YOU TAKE OUT THE 77 THAT WERE AT CRUFTS AND THE CLUB SHOW, BOTH ALWAYS HAVING EXPERIENCED, QUALIFIED JUDGES, THAT LEAVES AN AVERAGE OF 6.78 DOGS PER SHOW FOR ASPIRING JUDGES TO GO AT. EVEN IF WE GET TO THE “A MINUS” GRADE, THAT STILL NEEDS 3 APPOINTMENTS FOR PROGRESS, MAKING IT PAINFULLY SLOW

AFTER SO MANY YEARS OF DOING SUCH A GREAT JOB ORGANISING AND EDITING THE CLUB CALENDAR, JULIE HAS DECIDED TO STEP DOWN THIS YEAR, AND JANICE ROBINSON HAS AGREED TO TAKE ON THE BURDEN OF SORTING AND SELECTING THE PICTURES TO GO IN FOR EACH MONTH. IT IS, AS YOU MIGHT IMAGINE, A MONUMENTAL TASK, AND SHE WILL BE MUCH HELPED BY YOU ALL SENDING IN SUPER PICTURES FOR HER TO SORT OUT….SO MUCH BETTER IF SHE HAS LOTS TO CHOOSE FROM. MORE INFORMATION ABOUT HOW TO DO THAT AS SOON AS I CAN.

I WAS SORRY TO READ THE ARTICLE ABOUT NEEDING A PET PASSPORT TO TAKE YOUR DOG TO NORTHERN IRELAND AFTER BREXIT BECOMES FULLY OPERATIONAL. I SUPPOSE IT IS SENSIBLE THAT THE ISLAND OF IRELAND SHOULD BE TREATED AS A WHOLE FOR HEALTH REASONS, ESPECIALLY AS THERE WILL BE NO PHYSICAL LAND BORDER BETWEEN NORTH AND SOUTH, BUT IT IS ONE MORE DIFFICULTY FOR US IN THE UK. I DO HOPE IT WON’T STOP OUR IRISH FRIENDS FROM COMING TO OUR SHOWS, AND INDEED VICE VERSA. WE MUST GIVE EVERY ENCOURAGEMENT TO OUR GOVERNMENT TO GET AN AGREEMENT WITH THE E.U. SO THAT AT LEAST WE CAN STILL TRAVEL WITH PET PASSPORTS, AND NOT HAVE TO REVERT TO A MORE STRINGENT REGIME OF TESTS ETC, OR EVEN THE DREADED QUARANTINE. WE AS A BREED HAVE BENEFITTED GREATLY FROM THE EASIER MOVEMENT OF THE LAST FEW YEARS, NOT ONLY FOR PUPPIES, BUT ALSO THE ABILITY TO USE STUD DOGS FROM ABROAD. IT WOULD BE A DISASTER FOR US TO GO BACK TO THE OLD DAYS.

WITH THE SLIGHT EASING OF THE LOCK-DOWN REGULATIONS, NOT ONLY HAVE WE HAD OUR FIRST POTENTIAL OWNER VISIT OF THE YEAR….SOCIALLY DISTANCING IN THE GARDEN, OF COURSE…BUT WE WERE ABLE TO DO A LITTLE DOG-SITTING FOR MAGGIE & LLOYD WHEN THEY HAD TO ATTEND A FUNERAL LAST WEEK. IT WAS THE FIRST TIME I HAD DRIVEN OUT OF OUR PROPERTY SINCE CRUFTS,

APART FROM AN ABORTIVE VISIT TO HOSPITAL. I MUST SAY IT FELT IT A LITTLE STRANGE, BUT I EXPECT I COULD GET USED TO IT AGAIN IF I REALLY HAVE TO.

KEEP SAFE
