Breed Notes - 15 Mar 2020
WELL, CRUFTS HAS BEEN AND GONE FOR ANOTHER YEAR. IT MUST NOW BE NEARLY FIFTY YEARS SINCE I FIRST WENT, WHEN IT WAS AT OLYMPIA IN LONDON, AND YOU HAD TO FIND A PARKING SPOT ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. IT IS A MUCH BIGGER AND SLICKER ORGANISATION NOWADAYS. ONE THING I DID NOTICE THIS YEAR WAS HOW VERY HELPFUL AND CHEERY ALL THE OFFICIAL ATTENDANTS WERE, EXEMPLIFIED BY MAGGIE SPENCER’S CAR PARK EXPERIENCE. SHE ARRIVED EARLY ON FRIDAY TO DO HER STINT ON THE “DISCOVER DOGS” STAND IN HER LARGE AND HEAVY VAN. SHE WAS DIRECTED TO A PARKING SPOT ON GRASS, AND OF COURSE GOT COMPLETELY STUCK, WITH SOME OF THE VAN PROTRUDING INTO THE TRAFFIC FLOW. THE CAR PARK ATTENDANTS SENT HER OFF TO THE STALL, SAYING THEY WOULD DIRECT CARS ROUND HER AND GET HER OUT OF THE MUD WHEN SHE WANTED TO GO HOME AT THE END OF THE DAY.

HOVAWARTS WERE PROMINENT IN AREAS OTHER THAN THE RING THIS YEAR, WITH JANICE ROINSON COLLECTING HER RALLY TROPHY ND PAULA FOAKES REPRESENTING (I THINK) A SECOND-PLACED SOUTH EAST OBEDIENCE TEAM….WATCH THE VIDEO OF HER HEEL WORK IF YOU CAN…EXEMPLARY !!

AS JOHN WAS JUDGING, WE HAD AN EARLY START ON SATURDAY FOR HIS KC BRIEFING, WHICH GAVE US THE MORNING TO LOOK ABOUT THE SHOW…EXCEPT THAT WE NEEDED TO BE OUT OF CONTACT WITH ANY OF THE EXHIBITORS IF POSSIBLE. QUITE A LOT OF COFFEE WAS DRUNK. SADLY, HE HOVAWARTS DIDN’T GET INTO THE RING UNTIL AFTER 3.30pm, AND THEN OF COURSE THERE WAS A LOT OF PRESSURE TO HURRY THROUGH THE CLASSES TO ENSURE THE BEST-OF-BREED MADE IT TO THE GROUP. WE ALWAYS SEEM TO BE POOR RELATIONS AT SHOWS, BUT WITHOUT CCs IT IS HARD TO SEE THE SITUATION ALTERING. ANYWAY, THE RINGSIDE THIS YEAR SEEMED QUIETER THAN USUAL, THERE CERTAINLY WEREN’T THE FOREIGN VISITORS, EXCEPT OF COURSE THE IRISH CONNTINGENT, BUT THEY ARE MUCH MORE LIKE RELATIONS THAN FOREIGNERS. THEY CERTAINLY DID WELL, TAKING BOTH TOP AWARDS AS WELL AS A LOT OF THE MINOR PLACINGS, AND IT WAS THRILLING TO WATCH GUINNESS LOOKING SO GOOD IN THE GROUP RING.

AS I WRITE, THE FUTURE FOR SHOWS LOOKS REALLY UNCERTAIN, BUT JUST IN CASE THEY DO GO AHEAD, CAN I REMIND YOU THAT REDDITCH & DISTRICT CANINE SOCIETY HAS HOVAWART CLASSES SCHEDULED AT IT’S MAY 16th SHOW AT THE SPORTS CONNEXION, COVENTRY O BE JUDGED BY TATE FORSEY, AND THAT THE NEXT CHAMPIONSHIP SHOW IS WELSH WORKING & PASTORAL ON 18th APRIL AT BUILTH WELLS, JUDGE MR.G.HILL. THE CLOSING DATE ON-LINE IS 22nd MARCH. THE CLIUB AGM IS ON THE FOLLOWING DAY TO THE SHOW, AT WORTHEN VILLAGE HALL, SHROPSHIRE, SO YOU COULD MAKE A WEEKEND OF IT…..ALWAYS ASSUMING THESE EVENTS WILL ACTUALLY TAKE PLACE. FINGERS CROSSED, EH ?!

IN CASE YOU WERE WONDERING, MAGGIE DID GET HOME. THE MUD DRIED UP DURING THE DAY, SO WITH THE HELP OF A COUPLE OF SEND-AWAY MATS UNDER THE FRONT WHEELS, SHE MANAGED TO GET OUT UNASSISTED, BUT I’M SURE THOSE GUYS WOULD HAVE BEEN THERE FOR HER HAD SHE NEEDED THEM.
