Breed Notes (Dog World - Elaine Sharpe) - 7 Jun 2017
Congratulations to Maggie Spencer on winning “B” with her Dollar (Hightimbers Dollar). It is amazingly difficult to achieve this sort of result when you bear in mind that you have to beat up to 60 dogs on the day, most of them being working collies of one sort or another, and at that level, the slightest error is heavily penalised. If you want to get the lowdown on how it’s done, Maggie is holding another of her very popular hovawart training days on June 17th in Surrey. Her contact details are on the Club website, or give me a call and I will give you the necessary information.

Last weekend was the Dundee Open Show, with Peter Simmons judging. I don’t have all the results but I gather Mark Tyreman’s Ted (Fasskoleys Mathan) was BoB, and got to the last cut in the group, a wonderful achievement for a veteran. I hope someone will let me have the full results and attendances in due course.

At the other end of the age scale, plaudits go to Janice and Dave’s Leo (Zwartbos Moonshine Whiskey) for gaining the KC Good Citizens Silver Award at the tender age of 11 months. These awards are not easily come by, and to get that far with a puppy shows a lot of skill and dedication to training.

Mention of Dave brings me neatly round to the new website Facebook group that has been set up, called Hovawart Activities. This is running in parallel to the now well established Hovawarts UK, and so we enthusiasts get double the number of pictures and stories about our wonderful dogs. I know there can be dangers with these sites, but used properly, they can promote all that is good and fun about our breed.

We didn’t make it to Bath Show, something to do with our daughter having managed to produce 2 large litters of Hungarian Vizslas in the course of a week (good planning out the window !!), and it was all hands to the pump. We had breed classes for the first time and chairman Gill Stockton made Val Shone’s day by making her Ursine vd Romerweide of Zwartbos BoB, BB and BV, with her puppy Z.Moondance BP on her very first outing. In addition, Moondance’s litter brother Z.Moonshine Whiskey was BD….what a day!!!

Entries close soon for the National Working and Pastoral Show at Malvern on July 15th. It is their Golden Anniversary show, so there are lots of special prizes to be won. Our judge is Terry Munro, who judge us at Crufts as long ago as last century (just…1999), and if the weather is clement, there is no nicer venue.
