Breed Notes (Our Dogs - Craig Hosie) 17 Apr 2017
My last set of breed notes , I spoke about a book on Dog Breeding, Whelping and puppy care by the author Gary England who is a veterinary specialist in animal reproduction and works as a professor in comparative veterinary reproduction at the university of Nottingham, he has published over 100 scientific articles and his specialist knowledge in this subject is evident in his book with reference to the many research articles he has undertaken. The book is aimed to be used by dog breeders, veterinary students and veterinary surgeons alike . There was good sections on the normal verses the abnormal and I found information on what I was looking for . A must for the book case of any dog breeder.

Onto show news and this weekend was Working & Pastoral breeds of Wales held in the lovely Royal Welsh show ground , Builth Wells and a good entry for Mrs Kennedy of 16 Hovawarts with 5 absentees and she found her BOB in the dog, Pines Wiggins a lovely B&G owned by Mark and Becky Harrison from the post Grad class, this was Milo’s first BOB , so a very well done to you both. RBD went to Julie Condrons Zwartbos Carisbrooke a lovely black boy with BB & BV going to John & Elaine’s lovely B&G Pines Acorn CDEX,UDEX with the reserve bitch going to Kanukalos Burletta another lovely B&G owned and bred by Mr & Mrs McLure , with BP going to Janice & Dave Robinson & Brown’s handsome blonde Zwartbos Moonshine Whiskey. It was lovely to see all three colours in the line up and a very well done to all on the cards. The rare breed working was judged by Mrs C Friend-Rees with Julie’s Gunner, Zwartbos Carisbrooke taking the RBD with the BB & BOB going to Annvad Lady Hazel a beautiful B&G bitch owned by Gill Stockton and bred by Ann Travis with reserve going to another beautiful blonde Hightimbers Penny owned by the McLures. Best puppy went to Janice & Dave’s blonde Zwartbos Moonshine Whiskey. The rare breeds were well supported by Hovies with Zwartbos Moet winning the limit bitch class for Janice & Dave and Gina Challoner getting a second with Isalynn V Elderens Hof , and third Sarah & Mark Hemsworth’ Driftingsky Tousle, post graduate bitch was won by Kanukalos Burletta , a very well done to all who went along to support the classes and promote our wonderful breed, it looked like everybody enjoyed themselves from the photos on hovies UK. I would also like to mention Gina Challoners recent visit to the contest of Champions who with her Hovawart Isalynns V Elderens Hof represented the breed as she was top Hovie last year and it is an invitation only , did the breed proud and the photos I seen on Facebook was great , she had to compete against other top dogs of their breed , she did us proud Gina and you join the select few in our breed who have attended this event. The club AGM is past for another year with what I believe was a reasonable attendance . Discussion took place on DM testing and one new addition to the committee was Gina Challoner replacing Susie Theyar . The club show this year is a special anniversary to be held on the weekend of the 30th September/ 1st October. On the Saturday 30th will be the breed show being judged by Ans Schellekens van Vught and Thornton Cleveleys dog club will be running the Good Citizens dog scheme assessments , with obedience and rally taking place as well. As soon as I find out the judges for the obedience, special awards classes and Rally I will let you know. The Saturday night I believe will be a social night with a Breed seminar on the Sunday with a talk on the standard in the morning with a breed assessment for judges in the afternoon. If you are interested in attending the seminar or taking part in the breed assessment in the afternoon , if you email Liz our club secretary and further details will be given, hovies@driftingsky.co.uk . It sounds a great weekend and I am really looking forward to it. Please put it in your diaries . still on the topics of shows , there is 2 shows that are coming up that have classes for Hovawarts . The first in Scotland , Perthshire canine club open show on the 13th May at the Jim Clark Auction Hall, Errol Airfield , Perth have given us one class and the judge is Mrs W Mc Coll , entries close 24th April postmark.
